Kimo graduated from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo with a bachelor’s degree in Crop Science with a focus in Agronomy and Plant Protection.

He was hired by Amfac in 1979 as a diversified crops supervisor at Lihue Plantation on Kauai. He moved to Pioneer Mill Sugar Company in 1982 as assistant Agronomist and became Department head of Ag Reserach in 1987. Aside from managing the crop control duties of sugar production, his department also oversaw any work relative to the development of new crops. His team planted the first coffee test plots at Pioneer Mill which eventually grew to 550 acres of specialty coffee under the limited business name Ka’anapali Estate Coffee, which was a subsidy of Pioneer Mill Co.

In 1999 Pioneer Mill Co., closed its sugar operations and likewise it’s coffee operations in 2001. In 2003, Kimo launched MauiGrown Coffee, Inc. (MGC) through a lease of the former, abandoned Kaanapali Estate Coffee farm with his former employers and landowners, JMB Realty, who had bought Amfac in 1988. MGC was successful in saving 500 of the original 550 acres from demise and continues to supply Maui origin coffee throughout Hawaii, mainland and international destinations.

He continues to expand his coffee acreage in Ka’anapali. His Family goes back multiple generations in Lahaina. His wife and 2 sons reside there.
